(Newport, Oregon) - Get ready for a touch of the '20s – not this '20s, but the roaring ones 100 years ago.
The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts will bring a burst of New Orleans energy to the Newport Performing Arts Center on Sunday, March 1, 2026, when The Late Risers perform at 2 p.m. in the David Ogden Stiers Theatre.
Celebrated as “the musical equivalent of blue skies and glorious sunshine,” the ensemble has become known for its upbeat, traditional jazz sound led by trumpeter Sam Dechenne. Their style blends the speakeasy swagger of the Prohibition era with the lavish flair of *The Great Gatsby* and the brass-driven exuberance of Mardi Gras.
Formed in 2014, The Late Risers have grown into a fixture of the East Coast jazz scene, appearing at major clubs, swing dances, and festivals. Their Newport performance marks a rare West Coast appearance. “The Late Risers don’t just play music; they create an atmosphere,” said Jason Holland, OCCA Executive Director. “It’s impossible to sit through a set without a smile on your face and your feet tapping along.”
The group features a classic lineup of trumpet, clarinet, banjo, and tuba, performing a mix of traditional standards, original works, and inventive jazz takes on contemporary tunes.
Tickets are $35 and available at the Newport Performing Arts Center box office at 777 W. Olive Street, by phone at 541-265-2787, or online at coastarts.org. An additional fee applies to online purchases.
