(Toledo Oregon) – Some central Oregon coast roads were closed for awhile this morning after a railcar derailed near Toledo. Wheels apparently left the track and then caused damage to the bridge in one area midway across the river, although there is no official word yet on the cause. All traffic has been reopened since early in the day.

There were no injuries and no hazardous material was spilled. However, it appears crews have set down booms into the water to capture any liquids such as oil.

The incident occurred about 5 a.m., and when first word of the accident was sent out by the City of Toledo at around 10 a.m., they announced a few traffic closures.

“Due to a railcar derailment, SE East Slope Road, from SE 10th Street to SE Butler Bridge Road, is closed. There will be no through-traffic at this time. Truck traffic coming from US Highway 20, intended for NE Sturdevant Road, will be rerouted to the West Junction for the time being,” the City said at 10 a.m.

By 2 p.m., traffic diversions had been opened.

Santiam Sound was on scene doing a report today - see above.

“Please follow the posted signage and proceed with caution,” the City said.

Traffic on Highway 20 had not been affected – only roads within Toledo.

Currently, a variety of work crews are removing traincars from the tracks.

Investigators have been on scene all day.

Toledo is a small town in Lincoln County several miles east of Newport, well-known for its arts and fishing scenes.
