(Coos Bay, Oregon) – Two more quakes popped off near the south Oregon coast on Saturday, after three had rattled below the ocean waters off Bandon on Wednesday and Thursday.
The first was at 10:12 a.m. Saturday about 139 miles east of Coos Bay. That was a small one at magnitude 3.2, happening some six miles below the ground.
The second was a sizable magnitude 5.1 quake that was large enough initiated a bulletin there would be no tsunami alert. That one was centered about 139 miles west of Bandon, farther north than the smaller one, happening at 3:12 p.m. It too was six miles deep.
The second one had nine people so far say they felt it.
When those initial three happened on Wednesday, the US Geological Society (USGS) said it kicked in a “green pager” alert, which on land is often a warning that some fatalities could happen. However, this was at sea, more than 140 miles from Bandon, so it posed no risk to structures or people.

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the Oregon coast late Wednesday night, the strongest in a series of tremors recorded near the Gorda Ridge and Blanco Fracture Zone. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 11:45 p.m. on September 24, centered approximately six miles beneath the ocean floor and about 143 miles west of Bandon.
UPDATE: 3 Quakes Off S. Oregon Coast Since Midnight, No Tsunami Alert- Was enough for a 'green pager' alert, but no damage: west of Coos Bay, Bandon
The USGS sent alerts of possible aftershocks, and two smaller quakes followed within hours. A magnitude 3.0 tremor was recorded at 12:22 a.m., roughly four miles from the initial epicenter, at 147 miles west of Bandon. A third quake, also measuring 3.0, occurred at 3:05 a.m., this time 141 miles west of the coastal town. All three events originated at similar depths.

The seismic activity was located about 150 miles from Coos Bay and 170 miles from Newport, well offshore and away from populated areas. No damage or tsunami threat was reported.

These quakes occurred within a known cluster of faults near the Gorda Ridge and Blanco Fracture Zone, a seismically active region that experiences multiple events annually. Experts emphasize that activity in this zone is not directly linked to the nearby Cascadia Subduction Zone, a much larger fault system capable of producing catastrophic earthquakes.
