In Lincoln City, at the extreme southern end of town, there is the Roads End state park area, which includes some hiking opportunities up above. Unfortunately, hikers and other explorers end up getting stuck on those soft cliffs.

North Lincoln Fire & Rescue said it responded to that spot shortly before 6:45 a.m. on August 27, after a person reported missing overnight was found stranded on a cliff above the beach in Roads End.

Information from 911 callers helped crews pinpoint the individual’s location, roughly 150 feet above the shoreline on a loose shale slope. Because of the steep, unstable terrain, the Lincoln County Technical Rescue Team was placed on standby in case a rope rescue became necessary.

Personnel from North Lincoln Fire & Rescue, Newport Fire Department, and Siletz Fire District responded as part of the team, while Depoe Bay Fire District deployed a drone to help determine the safest access route. Pacific West Ambulance also arrived to provide medical support.

“Crews were able to reach the person from the beach without the need for a rope rescue and assisted them safely down from the cliff. The person was not injured,” NLFR said.

Lincoln City Police Department helped at the scene and reunited the person with their family.

“North Lincoln Fire & Rescue would like to thank the 911 callers who provided information that helped crews locate the person, as well as the Lincoln City Police Department dispatchers for their assistance,” the agency said. “We also appreciate the response and support from Newport Fire Department, Siletz Valley RFPD,@Depoe Bay Fire District, Pacific West Ambulance, and Lincoln City Police Department.”
