That is just what happened Sunday when a pair of teens got stranded on the side of a cliff at Roads End Point at the northern edges of Lincoln City. An Oregon coast hiking icon, the spot includes some rather steep edges where people get tempted to explore.

That's a bad idea, as two teens discovered. When they became stranded on that cliffside, North Lincoln Fire and Rescue (NLFR) personnel went to assist – and normally this works out well. The agency has done this multiple times.

This time, however, one of the rescuers became stranded as well.

“Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River were contacted by Lincoln County Dispatch who requested assistance rescuing the two teens, along with a member of the Lincoln County Fire Department, who had become stuck while attempting to rescue the two teens,” said US Coast Guard's (USCG) Northwest District.

A Coast Guard MH-60 helicopter crew form Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, Oregon, was flown out to the scene.

In the video, you can see the personnel drop from the aircraft, slowly inching down to the cliffs. There, the rescuer straps in each of the three at different points and brings them up into the copter.

“The Coast Guard helicopter crew safely hoisted all three of the individuals in distress and transported them to Siletz Bay State Airfield,” the USCG said.

This part of the central Oregon coast - including the narrow God's Thumb – have offered plenty of challenges before to both Lincoln County and USCG personnel.

"Our air crews frequently train with our agency partner agencies to conduct rescues in a variety of conditions and terrain in the Pacific Northwest," said CDR Amanda Denning, Executive Officer of Coast Guard Air Station Astoria. "We are extremely happy that we were able to rescue the three individuals and transport them to safety."

These rescues are paid by taxpayer money: there have been six such rescues in this Lincoln City spot in the last year. See the rescue in Oct 2024
