(Bandon, Oregon) – In recent years, riding rough and bumpy in the wilds of the hills above beach towns has become the thing to do. Ramping up that adrenaline has been the Ride the Dirt Wave races where dozens compete on mountain bikes and maybe hundreds watch it all go down.
2025 sees the the event growing.
Two major stops remain in the Ride the Dirt Wave series, the largest mountain biking event traversing Oregon's coastal trails. Following a successful kickoff near Seaside in June, the series continues in Bandon on July 19–20 and concludes in Newport on August 2–3.
The Bandon stage returns riders to the renowned Whiskey Run Mountain Bike Trails, located in Coos County Forest. The purpose-built trail system is known for its diverse terrain, weaving through old-growth evergreens and offering sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Riders of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate, with race starts scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
Whiskey Run features fast descents, technical challenges, and scenic coastal stretches, attracting a mix of amateur and elite mountain bikers from across the country. Located minutes from Coos Bay and Bandon, the venue remains a cornerstone of Oregon’s coastal cycling culture.
The series concludes in Newport, where the Big Creek Trails area will host the final races. Developed in partnership with the City of Newport and the NEWTS bike club, the trail system combines community investment with thrilling rides. Despite its compact layout, Big Creek offers a robust challenge for both new and seasoned riders.
Daniella Crowder, Director of Oregon Rides & Events, said there's a lot of thrills coming up.
“We’ve got some great additions this year for the final stop of the series at Big Creek Park,” she told Oregon Coast Beach Connection. “On Saturday, several awesome bike brands will be joining us: Propain Bikes will have demo bikes available to test ride on the trails, SRAM will be offering suspension set-ups and check-overs to get bikes dialed in for race day, and we’ll also have Kitworks and Blackstone Stitchworks showcasing their innovative bike gear and custom-made bags.”
Then, there's some amount of celebration in Newport on Saturday after the races.
“Followed by a party at Bier One from 5 - 7:30 PM,” Crowder said. “The big finale happens Sunday with the Ride the Dirt Wave Championship Enduro race, wrapping up the weekend with exciting action and community vibes in the skills park at the base of the course.”
The Flow Duro Challenge is the highlight, taking place across uniquely named tracks including “Norm!”, “Dude Sweet,” and “Learning Curves.” Riders can expect a 1.3-mile course featuring dynamic turns, fast drops, and lush forest climbs. Saturday races begin at 9 a.m., followed by Sunday starts at 10:30 a.m.
