Shifting Oregon Coast Weather Makes Tillamook Head Rescue More Dangerous, Unpredictable

(Seaside, Oregon) – The rescue of a hiker on a rough-edged Oregon coast landmark took first responders on several hours of hiking under increasingly dangerous and dark conditions as weather deteriorated Thursday. Tillamook Head from above - Oregon Coast Beach Connection.

What began with a stranded along the west side of Tillamook Head in the late afternoon ended up with a coordinated response involving Seaside Fire & Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard, Cannon Beach Police and Cannon Beach Fire District.

Crews were dispatched to the surfers parking lot in The Cove at Seaside after receiving GPS coordinates from the subject. Cannon Beach Police launched a drone to search the area, but inclement weather prevented it from reaching the location. The Coast Guard deployed both a motor lifeboat and a helicopter while Seaside firefighters began hiking toward the coordinates. Cannon Beach Fire District was requested to provide additional personnel.

After roughly an hour and a half of hiking through steep, rocky terrain, firefighters made voice contact with the subject and located them shortly afterward. The individual was uninjured but fatigued. Although the Coast Guard helicopter was overhead, weather and terrain made a hoist unsafe, and crews began escorting the subject out on foot. The return hike took another three hours, with firefighters navigating uneven ground in darkness and poor conditions. The subject was evaluated at the parking lot and did not require medical treatment.

“We appreciate the assistance and teamwork from Cannon Beach Fire District, Cannon Beach Police Department, and the United States Coast Guard throughout this incident,” Seaside Fire & Rescue said.

Responding units included Rescue 3156, Rescue 3251, Chief Officer 3163 and Chief Officer 3202.

Tillamook Head is one of those close-to-civilization hikes that can turn into remote and dangerous quickly.

The agency noted that the Oregon coast headland and other coastal routes can become hazardous quickly, especially near the shoreline.

They offered this advice:

- Check tide tables and weather conditions before your hike.
- Be aware of incoming tides, sneaker waves, and heavy surf that can quickly cut off your route back.
- Avoid climbing or traveling on wet, unstable cliffs and rocks.
- Stay on established trails whenever possible.
- Carry a charged phone and consider bringing a portable battery.
- Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return.

“Give yourself plenty of daylight and never rely on the beach as an exit route without knowing the tides,” the department said. “Conditions along the Oregon Coast can change quickly. Plan ahead, know your route, and always give the ocean plenty of space. “
