(Seaside, Oregon) – History along the Oregon coast and (this time) the Washington coast is put in the spotlight, as a famed lecture series gets started for the season again. (Knowles in the '20s)
The Seaside Museum & Historical Society will kick off the tenth season of its popular History & Hops series on Thursday, September 25, with a presentation by Washington State Parks Interpretive Ranger Aaron Webster. The event will be held at Seaside Brewing Co. and begins at 6:00 p.m.
Webster’s talk, titled “Naked and Afraid in 1921,” revisits the life of Joe Knowles, a man who captured national attention more than a century ago by venturing into the wilderness with no supplies and documenting his survival adventures in newspapers.
It's no made-for-TV pseudo reality show, however.
Seaview, Washington - Knowles at his home
From the Maine woods to the Siskiyou Mountains and eventually Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula, Knowles sparked public debate and caused much fascination among readers. Webster will explore how Knowles’ message about reconnecting with nature still resonates today, especially in a world increasingly shaped by technology.

History & Hops offers more than just historical lectures. The monthly series creates a casual space for locals and visitors to gather, enjoy craft beer, and engage in conversations about regional history. It's like dinner and a show, but with an historical slant. Held on the last Thursday of each month from September through May, the events are free and open to all.

Aaron Webster currently serves as an Interpretive Ranger at Cape Disappointment State Park. Outside of work, he enjoys fishing, hunting, and practicing ancestral skills such as hide tanning and fire making.
The September 25 event will take place at Seaside Brewing Co., located at 851 Broadway. Seating is limited, so early arrival is recommended. Food and drinks will be available before the program begins.
History & Hops is supported by the Seaside Museum, Seaside Public Library, and Seaside Brewing Co. The Seaside Museum & Historical Society, founded in 1974, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history and culture of Seaside and the surrounding area. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
