(Astoria, Oregon) – There's a bit of a reprieve for those traveling to and from the Oregon coast and Washington coast, while one part of that border between states is seeing some minor road closures as of this week. (Oregon Coast Beach Connection photo)
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has announced a delay in the start of maintenance work on the Astoria-Megler Bridge, pushing the timeline to late summer. Officials plan to begin construction in late August or early September, with work continuing through January 2026. ODOT has assured travelers that they will provide advance notice before the project begins.
Once construction starts, crews will work during the day from Monday through Thursday, wrapping up by noon on Fridays. The project will require daytime single-lane closures, with flaggers on-site to help direct traffic. A temporary work platform will be installed under the bridge, and drivers should anticipate construction noise and delays. Though most of the repairs will take place below the bridge, daily single-lane closures will be necessary to ensure safety.
Meanwhile, ODOT confirmed that the OR 104S road closure and detour went into effect on June 16. The Fort Stevens Highway Spur is now fully closed on both sides of the Skipanon River Bridge, a restriction expected to last about 60 days. Pedestrian access across the bridge is unavailable, and crews will be working daily from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. A signed detour will guide drivers around the closure via OR 104S, E Harbor Drive, Marlin Avenue, and U.S. 101.

Built in 1929, the Skipanon River Bridge is in poor condition and in need of extensive repairs. The famed north Oregon coast structure is a vital connection for residents traveling to schools, recreational areas, and nearby stores. Due to weight restrictions, certain emergency vehicles and other heavy transports have been unable to use the bridge.

“We're replacing the center portion,” ODOT said in a statement. “By making this repair, some heavier vehicles can start to use it again. This work will also help keep the bridge in use for years to come.”
