(Lincoln City, Oregon) – The busy Oregon coast tourism weekend once more meant someone would need rescuing, and it was on a spot that's become notorious for such emergencies. (Photo NLFR)
North Lincoln Fire & Rescue, US Coast Guard and other agencies rescued an injured hiker Sunday afternoon after she slipped down the slope at Roads End Point, which is just south of Lincoln City's God's Thumb hiking trail. The 25-year-old woman became stranded partway down the cliff, which has an abrupt drops not far away.
Crews were dispatched shortly before 2 p.m. on May 24 and located the woman roughly halfway down the cliff face in steep, unstable terrain. Because of the difficult access, the agency requested assistance from a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew and the Lincoln County Technical Rescue Team.
"At approximately 4:10 p.m., on May 24, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River were contacted by Lincoln County dispatch, who requested assistance rescuing a hiker from a cliff after she sustained multiple injuries during a fall," USCG staff said.
Firefighters reached the woman, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and stabilized her while preparing for an aerial hoist. The Coast Guard helicopter crew safely hoisted the individual and transported her to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital for medical treatment.
North Lincoln Fire & Rescue (NLFR) thanked the Coast Guard, the technical rescue team and the Lincoln City Police Department for their coordinated response.
"This rescue was a powerful reminder of how quickly a day outdoors can turn dangerous," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Ben Sobels, Coast Guard Aviation Survival Technician. "We're extremely grateful we were able to safely reunite her with her loved ones.”
(NLFR) also urged hikers to remain on designated trails in coastal areas, noting that venturing off established routes can lead to hazardous situations that require complex, high-risk rescue operations. Coastal cliffs in the Roads End and God’s Thumb areas are known for unstable footing and sudden drop-offs.
