South of Bandon, ODOT plans to shut down U.S. 101 for a weekend to replace a failing culvert buried deep beneath the highway. The closure is scheduled from Friday night through Sunday night, September 19-21. Crews will excavate more than 20 feet to remove the deteriorating pipe and install a larger replacement. The work zone presents challenges, bordered by a steep slope, wetlands, and a winding stream.

Traffic near Coos Bay and Coquille may get affected this week.

In another project, construction will soon begin on Oregon 42 between Coos Bay and Coquille. This summer, ODOT contractors will pave seven miles of highway, replace two dozen culverts, and repair seven bridges between the U.S. 101 junction and Coquille. Work begins the week of June 15-21, with lane restrictions in place on Oregon 42 from Davis Slough to Speedway Road. Traffic will shift to a temporary alignment, and drivers should watch for construction signs and detours. The $11.8 million project is expected to be completed by fall 2026, though Knife River aims to finish most of the work this year.

Bridge repairs are planned along the four-lane stretch of Oregon 42, affecting Davis Slough, Manning Gulch Slough, the Coos Bay Rail Line, and Beaver Creek. Drivers should anticipate periodic lane closures in these areas. Additionally, work on the Oregon 42 bridge over U.S. 101 will likely take place later this summer, requiring nighttime detours through the Davis Slough connector road.

Further north, ODOT is making progress on upgrades to U.S. 101 in downtown Garibaldi. Crews will pave the highway between 1st Street and 12th Street, with lane closures and 24-hour flagging in effect from June 16 to June 20. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., affecting side streets, sidewalks, and traffic flow. Businesses in the area will remain open.

Night work will begin June 22, running Sunday night through Thursday morning from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with flaggers directing traffic and additional side street closures. The improvements aim to enhance safety and accessibility for all travelers.

In the North Oregon Coast Range, ODOT has issued a reminder of a full road closure on OR 47 from June 16 to August 21. Crews have been clearing vegetation and preparing the work zone in Mist ahead of the shutdown. A detour will guide drivers around the closure via OR 47, Apiary Road, and U.S. 30. Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional night work as needed. Lane and shoulder closures will be in effect, and drivers should anticipate delays.

Those traveling along the Oregon coast this summer should plan accordingly and stay alert for changing road conditions.
