(Lincoln City, Oregon) – Fourth of July and its usual fireworks issues proved an extra headache for some local residents, and drew in fire departments and emergency responders from all over Lincoln County. (Photos NLFR)
Monday night, North Lincoln Fire & Rescue (NLFR) released more information on the incident that resulted in hours of fighting a fire on a steep slope and eight men getting charged for starting it.
NLF said they responded to a vegetation fire on the hill below a block of homes near Canyon Drive and Coast Ave. that night. There, they discovered a fire spreading through dry vegetation towards the buildings. At this steep angle and because of the sandy surface of the hill, crews had to begin hitting the fire from the top downward. The area is extremely difficult terrain.
A priority was protecting the homes. See more video of the beginning of the fire
“The fire ultimately grew to approximately one acre, prompting Level 2 evacuation notices for several nearby residences as a precaution,” NLFE said. “Firefighters stopped the fire's forward progress overnight, and crews remained on scene through the following afternoon conducting mop-up operations. No injuries or damage to structures were reported.”
The first Lincoln City police officers arrived on the scene a little after 9:30 p.m., with video showing one spot on the hill burning. That later grew quickly, and by 10 p.m. traffic in the area had been detoured.

The evacuation notices went out around 11:30 p.m. but were lowered to “Level One – Be Ready” status around 1 a.m. for a handful of addresses on the west side of the road that were closest to the fire.
Calls about the fire apparently first went out a little after 9 p.m., a blaze allegedly started by a group of 21-year-old males staying at a family home – not a vacation rental, according to witness reports. They had been lighting and then tossing fireworks towards the beach, hitting the grassy area.
The eight men were all cited for reckless burning offenses and will appear in court later this week.
“The fire was determined to have been caused by the improper use of fireworks,” NLFR said. “Following completion of the investigation, the Lincoln City Police Department cited eight individuals in connection with the fire.”
By 3 a.m., the fire had been contained and all but one engine left, along with a small contingent of firefighters to do mop-up and keep an eye on the remaining embers.

“This incident serves as an important reminder that fireworks can quickly ignite dry vegetation and threaten lives, homes, and natural resources,” NLFR said.
Personal fireworks of all kinds are banned in Lincoln City as well as the majority of the north coast. There were other fires breaking out around the region that night, according to 911 logs, including a cardboard box fire in a park.
NFLR said they were assisted by the Oregon Department of Forestry - West Oregon District, the Lincoln City Police Department, the Depoe Bay Fire District, Newport Fire Department, and additional mutual aid partners.
“Their coordinated response was instrumental in safely containing the fire,” NLFR said.
