(Tillamook, Oregon) – Everyone’s favorite Oregon coastal highway gets another shot at traffic redemption after causing so many issues this winter. Highway 6 goes under the knife a bit soon, but this section is closer to Tillamook and has nothing to do with the trouble spot this past year.
A major resurfacing project is planned for a five-mile stretch of Oregon Highway 6 to and from the Oregon coast, where crews will rebuild the aging roadway between mileposts 4.4 and 9. The Oregon Department of Transportation says the work will create a smoother, safer ride on a section of highway long affected by cracks, potholes, and deteriorating pavement.
There are no traffic impacts yet, but drivers should expect lane closures, flaggers, construction noise, and delays once work begins in spring 2026. ODOT is urging travelers to slow down in work zones, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes. The agency also reminds drivers that fines double in all Oregon work zones at all times.
The project will remove the existing driving surface, repave the corridor, apply permanent striping, and replace worn signs. Crews will also complete repairs on two bridges within the project area. At milepost 5.78, workers will replace the seal between bridge joints. At milepost 6.9, the bridge will receive new asphalt, a waterproof layer, and new joint seals.

Pedestrian access, including for people with disabilities, will be maintained through or around all work zones. TripCheck will provide updated traffic information throughout construction.
Design work for the project began in 2023 and will continue through 2026, with construction scheduled for the same year. The total cost for design and construction is $9.2 million.

Closer Portland, that infamous damage to Highway 6 began during the December 2025 storm, when a downhill landslide and a sunken roadway surface compromised OR 6 near milepost 35.
ODOT explained some details to Oregon Coast Beach Connection earlier this year.
“OR 6 was fully closed for much of the day on Dec. 19 while crews assessed damage and stabilized the area,” McCart told Oregon Coast Beach Connection. “Later that day, the highway reopened to one lane of traffic with flaggers alternating traffic through the work zone.”

Since that time, they were able to keep Highway 6 open but restricted to one lane and with 24/7 flagging. Then, out of the blue, a new issue popped up early in January and shut the entire road down again for a day.
After some rough moments in winter, this section of road is in good condition and no delays to minimum delays occur during the ongoing work. N. Oregon Coast's Highway 6 Back Open to Two Lanes After Month-Long Traffic Issues
