And what better way to goof off on the southern Oregon coast than a picnic or two and a giant flood of Corgis?

Gold Beach and Port Orford have put together a few surprises for the end of summer, with the 3rd Annual Corgi’s Gone Rogue on September 12, and a day of live music and looking back at Port Orford and US Coast Guard history on August 3.

The southern Oregon coast will get a lively splash of aloha this fall when the 3rd Annual Corgi’s Gone Rogue Beach Luau returns to Gold Beach on Saturday, September 12. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Turtle Rock RV Resort and celebrates one of the coast’s most playful traditions: corgis in full tropical flair.

Hosted by the Gold Beach Visitor Center, the luau features costumed corgis, beach-themed contests, photo ops, vendors and plenty of family-friendly entertainment. Organizers say the gathering is open to all dog lovers, whether you’re bringing a corgi of your own or simply want to enjoy the wagging chaos.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras, their aloha spirit and their beach-ready pups for an afternoon of ocean breezes and community fun along Hunter Creek Loop.

The event takes place at Turtle Rock RV Resort, 28788 Hunter Creek Loop in Gold Beach. For more details, contact the Gold Beach Visitor Center at 541-247-7526 or gbvc4@visitgoldbeach.com, and follow @CorgisGoneRogue for updates.

Then there are those hauntingly beautiful historical remnants of the US Coast Guard's beginnings at Port Orford. The park will throw a party.

The Cape Blanco Heritage Society and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will host the 21st Annual Picnic in the Park on Sunday, August 3, at Port Orford Heads State Park, celebrating both U.S. Coast Guard Day and Lighthouse Day. The gathering begins at 1 p.m. at the Port Orford Heads Lifeboat Station Museum, where visitors are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and a picnic lunch.

This year’s entertainment features The Allen Giardinelli Trio, a popular group known for its gypsy-jazz sound.

Lighthouse Day, observed nationally on August 7, will also be highlighted with information about ongoing efforts to restore the Cape Blanco Lighthouse and preserve Oregon’s lighthouse-keeping history.

The event also recognizes the origins of the U.S. Coast Guard. The Revenue Cutter Service, founded on August 4, 1790, later merged with the Lifesaving Service in 1915 to form today’s US Coast Guard. The Cutter Service played roles in the Civil War, Alaska’s development and early environmental protection, including enforcement of the 1822 Timber Act.

Hit the event and you can also tour the museum before or during the concert and explore the scenic trails overlooking the ocean. Port Orford Heads State Park is accessed from Highway 101 by turning west on 9th Street near Milepost 301 and following the road to its end.
