(Depoe Bay, Oregon) – Earlier this week was a stellar one for catching more of the killer whales along the Oregon coast. Numerous videos surfaced of them not just zipping around the waters but jumping out as well, something not often seen – flying out of the waves and diving back in. (Image: Late Bloomer Photography)
It was an incredible spectacle, but what you could not see in most of the videos is that they were actually hunting and truly living up to the name killer whales.
Now, video emerges of the melee in the waters from above, from a drone's perspective. Late Bloomer Photography sent the incredible footage to Julie Conrad, head of the Oregon Whale Sightings group on Facebook.
It’s a rare, true bird’s-eye view of the ocean’s top predators actively hunting a harbor seal, said Conrad. If you look close, you can see the seal trying to get away but successfully being circled and corralled by a fairly large, mixed pod of orcas.
This was the same area and time where they were seen jumping, but this particular sequence doesn't show that. It does show them circling the seal and the occasional tail-slap.
These kinds of videos give researchers an invaluable look at the intricacies of what’s happening beneath the surface during a hunt. It's not something we normally can see at all. The real action is quite hidden, but this snags a view – though somewhat gruesome – of how they go about their killing. Usually, scientists
have to infer what's going on.
Also of importance, Conrad says it shows two pods working together and utilizing a range of hunting techniques.
It’s also a great visual reminder of how they earned their name — well, one of their names.
“Orcinus orca is the Latin name for what some people affectionately call killer whales, or just simply, orcas,” Conrad said.
They're often seen to not eat the entire kill, leading many to say the killer whales just play with their food. While it is a harsh reality, it is nature. It's been going on for billions of years, but in this case that serves a purpose. Much of what they do here is hone their skills.
“And it's an invaluable learning experience for the young ones,” Conrad said.
“They specialize in hunting marine mammals, like seals, sea lions, dolphins, and occasionally other whales. There are only about 400 transient orcas in the entire west coast population, and only some of those have ever been documented in Oregon waters,” she told Oregon Coast Beach Connection.
Conrad said they typically remain silent and stealthy while hunting, so it makes sense to hunt in small pods of maybe a max of six.
“Plus, they're known to share their prey, so there has to be enough for everyone to get their fair share,” she said.
She said they spend about 80% of their time actively hunting and feeding, which eats a lot of calories in itself.
