A transformative infrastructure project has reshaped the heart of Garibaldi, making it more navigable and accessible for residents and visitors alike. A one-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 101, which doubles as Garibaldi’s main thoroughfare, has undergone a comprehensive upgrade that includes new pavement, sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and improved water improved drainage.

The $14.5 million initiative, known as the U.S. 101: Urban Upgrades project, began in 2024 and aimed to revitalize aging infrastructure while enhancing safety and mobility. The improvements span from 1st Street to 12th Street and include upgraded rail crossings at 3rd and 7th Streets, better water management systems, and refreshed signage and wayfinding throughout this section of north Oregon coast.

“U.S. 101 is more than just a highway here - it’s the main street of Garibaldi,” said Matthew Johnson, Assistant Resident Engineer. “This project reflects our shared commitment to maintaining and improving it for future generations.”

Final landscaping and minor site work are expected to wrap up later this year, but the bulk of the work is already complete. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and city officials marked the milestone with a ribbon cutting during the annual Garibaldi Days celebration, highlighting the collaboration between state and local partners.

“The Garibaldi community has been incredibly supportive and patient throughout construction,” said Bill Jablonski, Area 1 Manager. “These upgrades make the highway not just safer, but more welcoming and functional for all.”

The ceremony underscored the significance of the project not only as a transportation improvement but as a civic investment in the town’s future, reinforcing Garibaldi’s role as a vital link along Oregon’s scenic coastal corridor. MORE GARIBALDI BELOW
