(Cannon Beach, Oregon) – The all-clear has been sounded on one of the most used beach accesses on the Oregon coast, after a sewage spill partially closed it down.
The City of Cannon Beach has officially cleared Gower Beach for public use following a sewage spill cleanup that began after a malfunction at the local pump station.
According to city officials, the incident began October 27, 2025, at approximately 10:37 a.m., originating from the Pacific Pump Station at 1200 Pacific Street. Overflow was triggered by a blockage in the manhole caused by heavy rainfall and a buildup of toilet paper around a flow sensor. This obstruction led to a diversion in the system and the subsequent release.
Public Works crews responded immediately, removing contaminated debris and initiating water quality testing.
"The malfunctioning device has been repaired, and the pump station is now operating normally,” said Karen Leoni, Public Works Director for the City of Cannon Beach.

Water samples were collected and analyzed in accordance with Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) standards. The results showed no contamination, confirming that the beach is again safe for recreation and public access.

City officials thanked residents and visitors for their patience during the cleanup and emphasized their commitment to public health and environmental safety.
