Cause, Situation Revealed in Fatal Accident on Highway 26 to Oregon Coast

(Seaside, Oregon) – On Monday, a fatal accident on Highway 26 shut down traffic to and from the Oregon coast for hours. Now, the cause and circumstance behind the tragic incident has been released.

A California woman was killed and three others seriously injured Monday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 26 in Clatsop County, according to Oregon State Police.

Troopers responded to the crash near milepost 23.4 at about 2:51 p.m. on October 26.

“The preliminary investigation indicated a westbound gray Toyota Highlander, operated by Abigail Hernandez Redondo (36) of Wilmington, California, lost control while negotiating a corner and entered the eastbound lane and collided head-on with an eastbound black Mercedes Benz MG3 SUV, operated by Gregory Allen Jones (69) of Beaverton,” said Oregon State Police (OSP). “An eastbound gray Volkswagen ID4, operated by Grant Nolen Humphries (43) of Portland, was subsequently struck by the Mercedes.”

Redondo was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the Toyota, Nestor Ivan Abaunzas-Alguera, 37, of Bell Gardens, California, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Jones and a passenger, Linda Jones, 65, also suffered serious injuries and were transported for treatment.

OSP said Humphries, an adult female passenger and two juvenile passengers in the Volkswagen were not injured.

Highway 26 was affected for about four hours while investigators worked at the scene.

Oregon State Police were assisted by the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, Seaside Fire Department, Banks Fire Department, Elsie Fire Department, Medix, Life Flight and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
