A sailboat found partially submerged and abandoned in Coos Bay earlier this month has now been removed, according to the Coos County Sheriff’s Office.

It sat in the lower Coos Bay area, on an area known as “Clam Island.”

The vessel was first discovered on September 5, 2026, sitting derelict and partially underwater. Marine Deputies coordinated with state agencies and additional personnel from the south Oregon coast to plan its removal.

“Thursday September 10th, Marine Deputies and Search & Rescue personnel began pumping water out of the vessel so it could be towed from the location,” the sheriff's office said.

Once refloated, the vessel was pulled off Clam Island and towed to the Charleston shipyard, where it was lifted from the water and secured.

Officials say derelict vessels continue to be a statewide problem, and the Sheriff’s Office Marine Division works to keep waterways safe and navigable.

Under Oregon law (ORS 830.911), law enforcement may seize abandoned or derelict vessels when there is probable cause the vessel meets that definition and when an owner fails to relocate it within the timeframe required under ORS 830.918 or any extension ordered under ORS 830.936.

Coos County authorities did not say what would happen to the vessel or what interactions occurred with the owner.
