Late-Night Rescue on Cape Lookout Trail Highlights Oregon Coast Hiking Hazards

(Oceanside, Oregon) - A late-night search and rescue unfolded Wednesday on the Cape Lookout Trail after a visitor suffered a medical emergency in steep, hazardous terrain on the north Oregon coast. (All photos NOFD)

Netarts-Oceanside Fire District (NOFD) volunteers, along with Tillamook Ambulance and Tillamook County responders, made their way into what crews described as extremely difficult ground. Rescuers located the patient, provided medical care, secured the individual in a Stokes basket and carried them down the trail to the beachhead. The patient was then transferred to Tillamook Ambulance for further evaluation.

NOFD said the rescue highlighted the challenges of Cape Lookout’s narrow, root-covered trail system, especially as daylight hours rapidly shorten. Locals refer to the seasonal shift as “the big dark,” when sunset arrives earlier each evening and visibility drops sharply.

The department said one bystander on the trail remarked that it was “darker than the inside of a cow out here.”

The NOFD offered a few tips on keeping safe on the Oregon coast:

They noted that this trail contains numerous hazards, made even worse after dark.

“The trail is full of trip hazards - tree roots / rootballs, and is very slippery in places,” the agency said. “A terrible trail for flip flops or sandals. Please carry a small backpack with a snack, water, a flashlight or headlamp, a whistle, and a jacket - just in case.”

Responders praised the teamwork of all agencies involved and reminded both locals and visitors to prepare carefully as fall conditions settle in along the Oregon coast.

It all comes just a week after the NOFD had to respond to a call for three young people who had somehow climbed their way into Lost Boy Beach – on the other side of Oceanside's Tunnel Beach. The spot is precarious and absolutely a bad idea at best, but usually it's completely unapproachable and stays hidden from view.

The three had managed to construct an SOS in the sand using driftwood.

Chief Jeff McBrayer told Oregon Coast Beach Connection the three had not gone over during any kind of negative tide, so they had likely gotten wet already. He wasn't sure how long they were there but he said they had used a satellite feature on cellphone to call for help.
