(Gearhart, Oregon) – Oregon State Police say they found a suspicious backpack in a public bathroom on the north Oregon coast, which turned out to be a bomb or explosive device of some sort. (Oregon Coast Beach Connection photo of Sunset Beach near Seaside)
Oregon State Parks notified OSP early Tuesday of a backpack at the Sunset Beach Recreation Site in Clatsop County, with the call coming in at 10:21 a.m.
“Oregon State Police located the backpack and requested explosives experts respond and investigate the incident,” OSP said. “Bomb technicians from the Oregon State Police and Salem Police Department responded to the scene and rendered the device safe. No injuries were associated with this incident.”
Jolene Kelley, Deputy Public Information Officer, was able to confirm to Oregon Coast Beach Connection: “It was determined to be an explosive device and was safely destroyed by bomb technicians,” she said.

OSP said it is not releasing any further information because of the ongoing investigation.
OSP and park rangers checked other Oregon coast locales and buildings but found no suspicious devices.
“While this is believed to be an isolated incident, the public should remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects to local law enforcement by calling 911 and remaining at a safe distance from the object,” OSP said.
Oregon State Police is asking any person with information related to the incident to contact investigators at *OSP (*677) or 1 (800) 442-0776 and reference case number SP25406805.
Oregon State Police were assisted by the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, Salem Police Department, Oregon Parks Department, Warrenton Fire Department, and Astoria Fire Department.

It has been an eventful set of days on the Oregon coast this past week. On Monday, a man fell into Thor's Well near Yachats and drowned. US Coast Guard crews then spent over two hours trying to recover the body in broiling sea conditions. On Tuesday – also on the north Oregon coast – rescuers had to look for a pair of missing swimmers in the surf at Seaside. One showed up on his own, unharmed. The girl had to be resuscitated on land and was taken to a nearby hospital.
