(Corvallis, Oregon) – Some fire restrictions have hit a good chunk of the Oregon coast, but it only means you can't have a fire outside of regular campground facilities in certain areas from Reedsport to up near Oceanside. Even then, it's mostly within the already-dry and tinder-like Coast Range hills and mountains. (Oregon Coast Beach Connection: atop Cape Perpetua)
The Siuslaw National Forest has implemented Stage I Public Use Restrictions beginning Monday, June 29, as unseasonably hot and dry weather continues to elevate wildfire concerns across the central Oregon Coast Range. Forest officials say the Fire Danger Level remains “moderate,” but conditions have prompted additional precautions.
Under the Forest Order, all campfires - including charcoal, briquette, pellet and other open flames - are prohibited outside designated recreation sites or campgrounds. The only exceptions apply to sand-camping areas within the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and Sand Lake Recreation Area. Portable cooking stoves and lanterns that use liquefied or bottled fuel remain allowed because they can be switched off immediately.
Smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles, buildings or developed recreation sites. Generators may be used only in areas without vegetation, such as paved surfaces or established campsites. Motorized vehicles are limited to designated roads and trails, though off-road and off-trail driving is permitted within the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and Sand Lake Recreation Area as outlined in the Siuslaw National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map.

The Forest Order will remain in effect until rescinded. Officials caution that fire restrictions can change quickly and urge visitors to “Know Before You Go” by checking local conditions before traveling onto forest lands. Wildfires should be reported to 9-1-1. Additional fire information is available on the Siuslaw National Forest website at https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/siuslaw/fire.
Other parts of the coastline may end up banning beach fires. Check with the local chamber before you go.
The Forest Service notes that it has spent more than a century working with communities to advance conservation efforts. The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, supports the nation’s forest industry and energy needs, and operates one of the world’s leading wildland fire and forestry research organizations. Through partnerships with tribes, states and private landowners, the Forest Service also helps steward an additional 900 million forested acres across the United States.

The boundaries of the forest run from just south of Lincoln City to about Sand Lake and include Sand Lake Rec Area itself, as well as areas in the Coast Range east of Pacific City, just east of Beaver, east of Lincoln City and the Cascade Head area. The North Central Coast District includes areas east of Highway 101 from Newport down through Florence, closer to Corvallis, as well as beach areas around Rock Creek, Devil's Churn, Tillicum Beach and Alder Dune near Florence. The South Central Coast District includes much of the dunes region from Florence down to Reedsport.
