(Oceanside, Oregon) – Things will be busy in the Oceanside / Netarts area of the north Oregon coast in early August, as Friends of Netarts Bay – WEBS and others present three major events. One is a musical celebration while two are in-depth environmental experiences this August, focused on Oregon coast ecosystems and sustainable practices. (Photo courtesy WEBS)
On August 11, WEBS teams up with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) for a hands-on clamming workshop at Netarts Bay. Designed for both newcomers and experienced clammers, the event offers expert instruction on identifying clam species, understanding bay clam populations, and practicing sustainable shellfish harvesting. Stewardship Coordinator Marina Dreeben describes it as an opportunity to “walk away with your catch limit of clams and a whole lot of knowledge.” Participants will learn alongside ODFW staff and WEBS volunteers, gaining insight into estuarine habitats while collecting clams. Registration is required, and spaces fill quickly.

Cape Lookout State Park becomes the backdrop for a celebration of culture and nature on August 3. Huehca Omeyocan returns with traditional Aztec-inspired music and dance, performing colorful, symbolic rituals that highlight the group's spiritual connection to the land. Co-hosted by Oregon State Parks, OSU Extension, and Oregon Shores, the day also includes nature activities and environmental education. Events begin at 11 a.m., and registration is encouraged. Full details and registration are available at www.netartsbaywebs.org/events.
On August 5, WEBS presents a free two-part salt marsh exploration program beginning at 9:00 a.m. The day starts with an indoor presentation on the plants and ecology of Oregon's coastal salt marshes, followed by a guided walking tour with biologist and former WEBS board member Jim Young. Attendees will discover vegetation succession from forest to dunes and explore how native plants adapt to salty, coastal conditions.
“This field-based walking tour includes an easy to moderate 1.5 to 3-mile hike through muddy, wet sand, and loose sand areas,” organizers said. “Trails may be covered by brush. This program is best suited for participants 12 years and older who are comfortable walking in these environments.”
It is the Oregon coast, after all, so participants should bring appropriate gear, including long pants, closed-toe shoes or boots, weather-resistant clothing, and insect protection. Transportation between locations is required, and a $10 Oregon State Parks parking pass may be needed. WEBS encourages attendees with accessibility needs to contact them in advance for accommodations. This event is part of the Explore Nature series, which highlights the conservation work and natural beauty of Tillamook County. Full details and registration are available at www.netartsbaywebs.org/events.
