(Newport, Oregon) – Newport has just joined an increasingly-long list of towns on the Oregon coast that have banned personal fireworks year-round. However, its massive professional fireworks show on July 4 will stay.

This week, the Newport Newport City Council approved a year-round ban on the possession, use, and sale of consumer fireworks within city limits, echoing a similar move it did over the summer with a temporary ban that expired in October.

City councilmen adopted the ordinance on a 6-1 vote at its February 17 meeting. The measure takes effect immediately and is aimed at reducing fire danger, protecting public safety, and limiting the potential for property damage.

The ban covers common consumer fireworks such as fountains, ground spinners, torches, and wheels. Items that remain allowed include sparklers, snakes, caps, model rockets, and trick noisemakers. The previous temporary ban did not include the sale of fireworks in town, but this includes that in the law.

"Newport joins Lincoln County and several other cities within the county that have already adopted year-round prohibitions on consumer fireworks," the Council said. "In previous years, the City Council determined whether to allow consumer fireworks on an annual basis in response to weather-related fire forecasts and risk."

Statewide fire activity fueled the council’s concerns. Between June and October 2025, Oregon saw more than 1,100 fires that burned roughly 350,000 acres. More than 700 of those fires were human-caused, according to the Oregon Office of the State Fire Marshal. While total acreage burned was lower than in 2024’s record season, the number of fires - and the number sparked by people - increased. Lincoln County also faced worsening drought conditions last summer, prompting Governor Tina Kotek to issue the county’s fourth drought declaration since 2018.

Despite the new restrictions, Newport will continue its annual Independence Day fireworks display. The July 4 show will again be launched over Yaquina Bay from the west end of the Port of Newport’s International Terminals, with Newport Fire Department crews providing oversight and safety support.

Cannon Beach has always had a ban on personal fireworks – largely because of Haystack Rock's wildlife. Currently, Yachats, Waldport and Lincoln City have banned the use of fireworks in town, except professional shows. Yachats and Lincoln City have also banned the sale of fireworks within town, as did Lincoln County's unicorporated areas.

Lincoln City famously – and controversially – replaced its fireworks show with a drone show this year, citing environmental and other safety concerns. Local police also said the move helps them better police beaches for the illegal use of fireworks on the sands.

It is illegal to use fireworks of any kind on Oregon coast beaches, which are generally under the umbrella of Oregon State Parks.
