(Port Orford, Oregon) – More video has been released of that dramatic rescue at Paradise Point this past week.
Taken by Sixes River Fire Department, team captain Ashley Moore described a rather tense scene as various agencies worked for about four hours to grab three fishermen and their dogs that were stranded aboard the F/V Texas Lady, after it ran aground on a dangerous shelf. It was stuck there, in the midst of heavy breaking waves, with almost no way else off the boat than by helicopter.
The new video shows about one minute of the US Coast Guard (USCG) rescue swimmer spinning in the air and trying to get down to the vessel, which was rocking from side to side in the precarious surf.
The second scene (about 19 seconds) gets even more dramatic as you see USCG personnel hoist one of the crewmembers and drop them on the sand.
The final scene comes from the original video and again shows the rescue swimmer dodging the masts of the ship as he tries to land on the ship.
Early in the overnight hours of January 11, the ship sent out a distress saying the 67-foot commercial fishing vessel was anchored but stranded in the surf at Paradise Point. Responding to the Texas Lady were the Sixes River Volunteer Fire Department, Sixes River Fire SCARR team (search and rescue dive team), Port Orford Fire Department RFPD, Cal Or Ambulance, and the US Coast Guard.
How or why has not yet been released.
Moore told Oregon Coast Beach Connection the area is extremely dangerous, with a shelf there that drops suddenly and a nasty undertow that snags people very easily. For this reason, conditions were extra dangerous and jumping off the ship was not possible – although one of the men made it that way.
The other two were lifted as you see in the video, and two dogs were rescued from the ship as well.
Since then, the ship is being slowly dismantled on the beach. Paradise Point is still closed as this work goes on (see below).
