(Florence, Oregon) - Florence is preparing for another fiery Independence Day celebration, and everyone is urged to bring their sense of awe, wonder – and fun. The central Oregon coast burgh is packed with a full day of small-town Independence Day traditions wotj its annual Old-Fashioned Fourth of July celebration along the Siuslaw River.
Marking the nation’s 250th birthday, the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of Florence, and the Port of Siuslaw are again partnering to present a lineup of family activities, contests, music, and a signature fireworks show over Historic Old Town.
The day begins with the Florence Kiwanis Club’s Bike Parade at 10 a.m., starting at Hemlock and First Streets and ending at the Port parking lot. Families are invited to decorate bikes, scooters, wagons, strollers, and even pets in red, white, and blue. Participation is free.
One of the event’s most popular traditions—the pie-eating and watermelon-eating contests—returns at the Port of Siuslaw near Nopal and Bay Streets. Hosted this year by the City of Dunes City, registration runs from 11 a.m. to noon, with contests beginning immediately afterward. Age divisions include 5–10, 11–15, and 16 and older, with each category capped at 36 participants.
“Our contests are back and ready for another year of laughs, competition, and sticky smiles,” said Bettina Hannigan, president and CEO of the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce. “Whether you’re competing or cheering from the sidelines, this is one of Florence’s most entertaining holiday traditions.”
