(Seaside, Oregon) – Think of it as a somewhat less scary horror movie sequel: Son of Bump could perhaps be the title. (Photos Angi D Wildt Gallery)
The infamous “Bump” is sort of back on the main highway to the north Oregon coast, with Highway 26 again getting another raised section of roadway. Although this time it's in a slightly different spot near MP 13 and a lot less hazardous.
Angi Wildt of Angi D Wildt Gallery in Astoria told Oregon Coast Beach Connection it's not like the bump that went away last year, which had sent numerous vehicles airborne, caused crashes and lots of damage.
She described it as a “sort of eruption at the yellow line, maybe 5 ft long, only maybe 2 ft wide and and two ft high.”
“It is hard to dial it in when you pass by, but I thought if someone cruises near that line, it would cause an accident,” Wildt said.

However, she noted that when she returned early on Thursday, crews were picking up cones and finishing up work that smoothed much of it out.
Mindy McCartt, a spokesman for Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), said it wasn't quite a problem as before.
“Crews noticed some movement recently and put out warning signs and cones late last week to alert drivers,” she told Oregon Coast Beach Connection.

Wildt said it had been mostly repaired already when she went out the second time.
“It was still a bit wavy when you go over it, but at 45 mph you'd probably be OK,” she said.

The Bump reached its worst this summer, and although ODOT had been talking about simply keeping traffic slow in the area, the agency rather suddenly went in and repaired it as much as possible. Last year's issue: Hazardous 'Bump' in Oregon Coast Range Finally Getting Integral Fix

“Earlier this summer, in August and September, we installed drainage across the entire highway in that area, which appeared to stabilize things for a while,” McCart said. “The ground conditions there continue to be challenging - it’s an area prone to movement because of groundwater and the natural slope beneath the road surface.”
ODOT is planning to add yet another drain when there's a decent break in the weather, one that will help redirect water and relieve pressure under the pavement.
“For now, we’ll keep monitoring and maintaining the site to make sure it remains safe for drivers,” McCartt said.
