(Florence, Oregon) - The Florence Events Center was recently the venue for the 17th annual Siuslaw Awards, honoring local central Oregon coast businesses, nonprofits, and individuals that made a difference in the area. Happening on June 13, it drew hundreds to the banquet and featured the 80s-themed talents of “DJ Al” Rojas playing hit music from the era, with attendees also dressing for the times.
Hosted by the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, the evening included a farewell to outgoing board members, introductions of incoming members, and a brief “state of the chamber” address by president and CEO Bettina Hannigan. She reflected on the Chamber’s recent progress, particularly in tourism and community engagement.
“It was an amazing event. People were dancing and everybody was in 1980s costumes. It was tremendous,” said Hannigan.
Awards were given in several categories during the evening:
The Rising Star Award, recognizing businesses under five years old for innovation and service excellence, was awarded to Truck Full of Posies. Other nominees included Dragons' Breath Pottery, The Green Room, The Krab Kettle, and Time & Flame.

The Making a Difference Award, honoring a nonprofit with significant local impact, was presented to Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshop (C.R.O.W.). Additional nominees were Backpack for Kids, the Collaborative Economic Development Organization (CEDO), and Siuslaw Outreach Services.
The Community Impact Award recognized HYAK Broadband for its commitment to giving back. Other contenders included Beth Rudometkin of American Pacific Mortgage, Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast, and Les Schwab Tire Center.
The Innovation of the Year Award went to the Oregon Coast Humane Society for its creative contributions to the area. Also nominated were Florentine Waterfront Hotel, Riptide Sports, and Sandpines Golf Links.

The Chamber’s Distinguished Service Award honored retiring board member Al Rojas of Oregon Pacific Bank. The award highlights behind-the-scenes dedication and a readiness to support events and initiatives that sustain the Chamber’s mission.
The Outstanding Ambassador Award was given to Kathy Bones, celebrated as a spirited and dedicated connector who helps represent both the Chamber and the city at key events and fosters strong community ties.
The Stu Johnston Business of the Year Award, named after the founder of Johnston Motors, was awarded to Florence Shipping Solutions. Nominees included Burch’s Roofing, Burns’s Riverside Chapel, and Lofy Construction.
The evening celebrated the power of community spirit and dedication, and underscored the Chamber's commitment to fostering local excellence.
