Now Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) has some updates, releasing new details on the widespread vandalism that damaged seven day-use restrooms along the central coast sometime between late Friday, August 21 and early Saturday, August 22. The affected sites stretch from Gleneden Beach, south of Lincoln City, to Agate Beach, north of Newport.

Officials now estimate repair costs at nearly $100,000.

Spokesman Lauren Wirtis said partitions had to be replaced in four restrooms, totaling more than $60,000. Another $15,000 covers plumbing fixtures, exterior door and lock repairs, paint, and dispensers.

“Our crews have removed truckloads of damaged materials and will complete the bulk of the repairs internally,” Wirtis said. “We hope to have all the facility repairs completed by October 1. Currently three of the parks have fully re-opened. One is open with temporary partitions. The remaining three had extensive damage and will take a little more time.”

According to OPRD:

Reopened: Fogarty Creek, Cape Foulweather, and Agate Beach
Open with temporary partitions: Devil’s Punchbowl
Closed with portable toilets available: Gleneden, Rocky Creek, and Boiler Bay

Damage varied greatly by location at times, including broken doors, shattered toilets, destroyed fixtures, missing dispensers, and trash scattered throughout the buildings. Mirrors were smashed and garbage containers overturned with the contents strewn throughout the facility. Investigators say fires were intentionally set at some sites, though no additional details have been released.

In one photo, you can see what appears to be paper towels that had been set on fire.

“Our team is so touched by the outpouring of community support,” said Wirtis. “We have had donations dropped off at the parks and offers to assist. While seeing this damage was so disheartening, the response from our communities reminds us how much Oregonians love their state parks and together we want to protect them.”

While some members of the public are piping up to try and volunteer to help, Wirtis said OPRD is going through recognized contractors.
