(Tillamook, Oregon) - Transportation projects continue to reshape travel along the north Oregon coast, with major updates from both the Astoria and Garibaldi areas, while another big but brief shutdown will effect 100s of miles around the southern coast.
In Astoria, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has reopened OR 104S following extensive repairs to the historic Skipanon River Bridge. The bridge, built in 1929, had been closed on both sides for much of the year while crews replaced its deteriorating center span.
The bridge had been in poor condition and subject to weight restrictions, limiting access for emergency services and heavy vehicles. With the center portion now replaced, some heavier vehicles will be able to use the bridge again. ODOT says the improvements will extend the bridge’s lifespan and restore access for residents traveling to schools, recreational areas, and local businesses. While the road is open, crews are still completing final work, and drivers are urged to use caution and watch for workers in the area. More Highway traffic info here

Farther south, in the Garibaldi and Nehalem region, crews are making steady progress on the replacement of the Crystal Creek and Dry Creek Bridges along Miami Foley Road. On September 8, Miami Foley Road will be fully closed at Crystal Creek from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to allow for the removal of old bridge beams. During the closure, a detour will be in place via U.S. 101, and travelers should expect daytime construction activity, noise, and delays.
“We plan to reopen a single lane of Miami Foley Road by 3:30 p.m. the same day,” ODOT said.
After the September 8 closure, Miami Foley Road will reopen to a single lane of traffic, regulated by a temporary signal. Construction will continue during daylight hours, and intermittent delays are expected as crews complete the bridge replacements.

A major closure is coming to U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway) between Bandon and Port Orford. It happens September 19 – 21 as crews work to replace a failing culvert located deep beneath the highway in challenging terrain.
Luckily, this only happens one weekend: the closure will begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, September 19, and continue through late Sunday night, September 21. The work zone is located near Bearhead Mountain Lane, approximately six miles south of Bandon.
There are no local roads that bypass the work zone. The only available detour requires a lengthy drive via U.S. 199 (Redwood Highway), Interstate 5, and Oregon 42 (Coos Bay - Roseburg Highway).
ODOT said it always aims to keep highways open during construction, but doing so in this case would require building a temporary bypass through sensitive terrain. That approach would significantly increase costs and extend traffic disruptions for up to six months.

Instead, the agency has opted for a rapid replacement strategy that reduces overall traffic impacts and one that will save more than $1 million. The full construction window in this part of the south Oregon coast is expected to last four to six weeks, including two to three weeks of single-lane closures before and after the weekend shutdown.
