(Seaside, Oregon) - Dark but fascinating Oregon history comes to life in Seaside at the end of October. History & Hops, a series of north Oregon coast history talks, returns on October 30 with “Graveyard of the Pacific.” It brings to town a former editor of Rolling Stone Magazine and other big names. The event features journalist and author Randall Sullivan, whose latest book, "Graveyard of the Pacific," dives deep into the deadly waters of the Columbia River Bar.
Part maritime history, part personal memoir, Sullivan’s presentation recounts his own attempt to cross the notorious bar - where thousands of vessels have been lost - and explores the historical tragedies that earned the region its ominous nickname. He’ll also share insights into his writing process and his decision to settle on the Oregon coast.
Sullivan served as a Contributing Editor at Rolling Stone Magazine for 23 years and at Men’s Journal for eight. His work has appeared in Esquire, Wired, Outside, The Guardian, and The Washington Post. He is the author of ten books, four of which - including "Graveyard of the Pacific" - have been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

His reporting and storytelling have inspired major film and television projects, including the movie "City of Lies" starring Johnny Depp and Forrest Whitaker, the Oprah Winfrey Network series "Miracle Detectives," and both versions of the television movie "Death of a Cheerleader." Sullivan is also widely known for his bestselling book "The Curse of Oak Island" and his appearances on the History Channel series of the same name.
The event begins at 6:00 PM at Seaside Brewing Co. (851 Broadway). Seating is limited, so early arrival is recommended. Attendees can enjoy food, drinks, and conversation before the program begins.
