(Bandon, Oregon) – Ever wanted to dive further into the subject of seaweed? Or perhaps time travel to the beginnings of an Oregon lighthouse? (Above: recent paint job of the Coquille River Lighthouse, courtesy Coquille River Lighthouse Keepers Foundation)
A set of south Oregon coast events at Bandon and near Coos Bay will do just that – which includes some almost “secret” state park events. Most importantly, however, the lighthouse at Bandon could use your support.
Sunset Bay State Park near Coos Bay will host two engaging “Sensational Seaweed” programs on August 5 and August 19, 2025, both beginning at 2:30 PM. Attendees should meet at the north end of Sunset Bay near the boat ramp. These educational sessions will explore the unique roles seaweed plays in forest ecosystems, food sources, and natural fertilizer, highlighting its surprising versatility and importance to coastal life.
On August 9 and August 23, 2025, Sunset Bay State Park will also offer a Nature Native Plant Walk beginning at 12:00 PM. Participants are invited to gather at the Shore Acres observation building to discover edible and practical uses for native coastal plants. This guided walk introduces visitors to wild flora that has sustained and inspired communities for generations.

Just a short drive south in Bandon, Bullards Beach State Park continues its popular summer Evening Programs at the Coquille River Lighthouse. On Friday, August 1st at 7:00 PM, local historian Richard Whitwer will present the story of the Coquille River Lighthouse. Originally built by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1896 and decommissioned in 1939, this coastal landmark rests where river meets ocean and remains a proud symbol of the area’s maritime past.
The following evening, on Saturday, August 2nd at 7:00 PM, Ranger Rob Brazie returns with “Who Eats Who: What About You?”—a thrilling look at predators of the Pacific Northwest. Drawing on his experience working with mountain lions, bears, wolves, and other carnivores during his time with Idaho Fish and Game, Ranger Brazie will reveal which predators swim in local waters, stalk coastal forests, and how humans fit into their food web.

The second weekend in this part of the south Oregon coast holds something special for lighthouse fans. Bandon's light needs some TLC.
The Coquille River Lighthouse Keepers Foundation is inviting the public to a special fundraising event on Saturday, August 9, aimed at raising support for critical repairs to the historic Coquille River Lighthouse. The “Save the Lighthouse” fundraiser will take place from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the West Pavilion in Bullards Beach State Park, just north of Bandon.
Organizers say the lighthouse’s stairs and railings are deteriorating and pose potential safety risks to visitors. Funds raised at the event will go directly toward the structure’s restoration, with particular focus on those urgently needed repairs.
The family-friendly gathering will feature a picnic with $1 all-beef hot dogs, cookies, brownies, and cream puffs. Attendees can also enjoy a presentation on the lighthouse's history and browse local lighthouse-themed artwork, along with branded merchandise including t-shirts, hoodies, and hats - all available for purchase.

More information about the event and the foundation’s restoration efforts is available at https://www.coquilleriverlighthousekeepers.org/.
Although it recently received a fab new paint job from Oregon State Parks, it needs more help. You can see other parts of the damage to the lighthouse - such as the well-weathered top – at the website.

Pacific View Assisted Living in Bandon is marking its 30th anniversary with a community celebration on Wednesday, September 11. Taking place from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at 1000 6th Ave W, the “Cruising Through the Years” event coincides with National Assisted Living Week and promises a lively afternoon of music, vintage automobiles, and local flavor. Guests can enjoy live performances by the South Coast Trio, browse a classic car show, sample fare from regional food trucks, and view a historical photo gallery. The celebration also includes presentations by guest speakers and local historians, offering a look back at Bandon’s past and Pacific View’s legacy.
