Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS and Portland-based queer birding group Queer Flockers are teaming up to host a Coastal Birding Extravaganza on Saturday, July 19, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The event invites LGBTQ nature enthusiasts and bird lovers of all backgrounds to connect, explore, and observe the diverse coastal habitats surrounding Tillamook Bay.

The group will traverse the tidal flats of the bay, walk the sands of Bayocean Spit, and take in the panoramic cliffs of Cape Meares. Organizers note that 119 bird species have already been observed in the area this year, with 28 recorded in June alone.

It's one of the more varied environments of the Oregon coast, and WEBS Director Chrissy Smith expressed excitement about the opportunity.

“We hope to see many of these species while taking in the diverse habitats of mudflats, grasslands, beaches and forests,” said WEBS director Chrissy Smith. “Come join us for what's sure to be a fun morning of hiking, exploring, birding and socializing.”

The event is capped at 20 attendees, with 10 registration slots allocated to Portland-based participants and 10 for residents of Tillamook County. Registration is required and available online.

Participants are encouraged to plan ahead for summer crowds by carpooling. Comfortable walking shoes, a packed lunch, and water are recommended for the day’s hikes along trails and beaches. Organizers ask that dogs stay home.

“If you have binoculars, bring them,” WEBS said. “We will also have binoculars, so don't worry if you don't have your own.”

Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS emphasizes its commitment to accessibility and encourages anyone with specific needs to reach out in advance. Additional information and registration details are available at www.netartsbaywebs.org/events
