(Port Orford, Oregon) – Curry County rescuers pulled a man out of a difficult and dangerous feature near Gold Beach Monday, after he reportedly fell off a steeply-inclined rock and was rather seriously injured. (Photos CCSO)
It happened at Sisters Rock State Park between Gold Beach and Port Orford. At this obscure south Oregon coast attraction, the Curry County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said a 23-year-old Beaverton man fell some 20 feet onto a hard, rocky surface and into a sea cave.
CCSO said dispatchers received a 911 call at about 4:42 p.m. from Nikhil Rowland, who reported he had fallen near the ocean below the Frankport area and was unable to climb back up. Rowland told dispatchers he had knocked out his front teeth, was bleeding, and was having difficulty breathing.
He said his vehicle was parked near milepost 315 on U.S. Highway 101 and that he had taken a trail down toward the water, where he was no longer visible from above.
“Rowland stated that first responders would not be able to see him where he had fallen,” said CCSO's Sgt. Jared Gray.

At approximately 4:54 p.m., Sgt. Gray located Rowland’s vehicle at a pullout above Frankport. Oregon State Police Trooper Parker Workman and Cal-Ore Life Flight paramedics arrived shortly afterward. Dispatchers were able to determine Rowland’s approximate location by pinging his cell phone.
Trooper Workman and a Cal-Ore paramedic hiked down the trail to the bottom of the cliff and found Rowland inside a large cave. Workman was able to guide him out under his own power so paramedics could begin treatment.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Gray navigated his patrol vehicle down an old, heavily rutted roadway with assistance from Search and Rescue member Tim Hawkins. The pair maneuvered through multiple washouts to reach the bottom of the Frankport area.

The area is extremely dangerous if you somehow get to areas at the bottom of the large, bulbous rock formations.
Gray’s vehicle was then used to transport Rowland, the paramedic, Trooper Workman, and several SAR personnel safely back to the top of the hill.

At about 5:53 p.m., Rowland was taken by Cal-Ore ambulance to Curry General Hospital for further treatment.
