Tentative Razor Clamming Dates Released for Washington Coast

(Ocean Shores, Washington) – Let the clamming floodgates open on the Washington coast.

Shellfish managers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) recently released a fall schedule outlining 40 tentative razor clam digging days at four Washington coast beaches, running October 9 through December 27.

You could plan your holidays around your trips to the Washington coastline.

Biologist Bryce Blumenthal said the upcoming season will look different depending on the beach.

"The razor clam season is right around the corner, and we’re excited to announce another fall schedule of harvest dates,” said Bryce Blumenthal, a WDFW coastal shellfish biologist. “Summer population assessments showed significant decreases on Copalis and Mocrocks, which will result in considerably less digging opportunity this season. Thankfully, Long Beach and Twin Harbors populations remain strong and should allow for similar amounts of harvest to previous years.”

All dates remain contingent on marine toxin testing. The Washington State Department of Health requires two domoic acid samples taken seven to ten days apart, and both must fall below the state’s guideline before any beach can open. Domoic acid is a naturally occurring toxin produced by certain algae and can be dangerous or fatal if consumed at high levels.

This can – and has – affected entire seasons of clamming.

WDFW urges diggers to review current toxin data on its domoic acid webpage and DOH’s shellfish safety resources.

If beaches receive clearance, the daily limit will again be 15 clams per person. Diggers must keep the first 15 clams they take, regardless of size or condition, and store them separately from other diggers’ harvests. Blumenthal noted that smaller clams are common early in the season and emphasized that discarding or reburying clams contributes to waste.

Kalaloch Beach will remain closed due to continued low numbers of harvestable razor clams.

WDFW reminds diggers that the best success typically comes one to two hours before low tide. The agency released a full list of tentative dates, low tides and beach openings for late-afternoon and evening digs.

Additional information

All diggers age 16 or older must have a valid 2026-2027 license to harvest razor clams on any beach. Licenses are available on WDFW’s website, through the MyWDFW mobile app, or from statewide license dealers and WDFW regional offices. WDFW recommends diggers buy their license before visiting coastal beach communities.
