(Newport, Oregon) - As autumn descends on Oregon and Southwest Washington, a major Oregon traditions gets underway, now spanning several days instead of just one and moving well beyond the beaches. SOLVE is inviting volunteers to take part in its annual Beach & Riverside Cleanup, scheduled for September 20 through 28. The event marks one of the largest community-driven environmental efforts of the year, and registration is now open.
The flagship event of the tradition is the coastal part, which began back in the '80s when the organization was called SOLV. Unlike previous decades, different Oregon coast towns have their cleanups on different days. Often these are on September 20 or September 28, but some are found on September 21.
You'll find them in the Coos Bay area, Florence, Waldport, many in the Newport area, as well as Rockaway Beach and Pacific City. https://www.solveoregon.org/beach-riverside
SOLVE CEO Kris Carico said the fall campaign is about restoring and protecting the places people have explored throughout the summer.
“It’s about coming together to care for the places that matter most, from keeping school routes safe to preparing green spaces for the months ahead," she said. "It’s important to take action before rains wash litter into our waterways, and our local actions have lasting and far-reaching impacts. The Beach & Riverside Cleanup is the centerpiece of this season, connecting local efforts to global movements that protect our rivers, beaches, and public lands.”

This year's cleanup, held in partnership with OnPoint Community Credit Union, spans ten days and aligns with three major environmental observances: International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 20, World Rivers Day on September 21, and National Public Lands Day on September 28. Each day highlights a different aspect of conservation, from shoreline protection to habitat restoration.

With more than 60 projects already open for registration, volunteers will have opportunities to remove litter, restore natural areas, and make a visible difference in neighborhoods, parks, and coastal zones. The event welcomes families, community groups, and businesses to join in a shared mission that has united Oregonians for nearly four decades. https://www.solveoregon.org/beach-riverside
