As Memorial Weekend looms, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) joins Oregon Department of Forestry and other local, statewide and national partners in recognizing May as Wildfire Awareness Month.

“Campfires are a beloved tradition when visiting Oregon State Parks, and staff encourage visitors to enjoy them safely when and where permitted,” OPRD said.

However, before your sojourn out to the Oregon coast or any other state park, OPRD said you need to check ahead for any fire restrictions to ensure fires are allowed.

If permitted, follow these safety guidelines and ranger instructions to minimize wildfire risks:

First, always review campfire regulations for Oregon State Parks along with statewide fire restrictions. Only build campfires in existing fire rings at campsites, as they are strategically placed to reduce fire hazards. Keep campfire flames at or below knee height, approximately two feet, to prevent ash and embers from drifting into trees or dry vegetation. Always have water nearby to safely extinguish the flames, stir the embers, and ensure everything is soaked, since ash and wood debris can retain heat.

There are different guidelines for the Oregon coast shoreline and places like inland forests.

“Build beach campfires only where permitted on open sand and away from driftwood or vegetation,” OPRD said. “Slowly pour water on your beach fire to put it out. Pouring water too quickly can cause hot sand to fly. Don’t use sand to put out a beach fire, which insulates the coals and keeps them hot enough to burn someone even days later.”

More details can be found on the Oregon State Parks website.

Propane fire rings should be used only in areas without vegetation or overhanging branches. Rules may vary depending on location, so check with park staff. It’s also essential to ensure everyone in your campsite understands fire safety, including children. Never leave a campfire unattended, as accidental fires can start unexpectedly.

Official regulations are outlined in the Oregon Administrative Rules, which can be reviewed at this link. While education is the primary focus of enforcement, rangers may issue a Class A violation for significant or repeated offenses, with fines reaching up to $400.

Additionally, explosives and fireworks are strictly prohibited in state parks and along the ocean shore, as they pose risks to visitors, wildlife, and the landscape. High winds and flammable vegetation increase these dangers, especially in crowded areas.
