Group of Five Rescued from Oregon Coast Surf After Repeated Warnings by Lifeguards

The incident happened on Tuesday, July 21, at about 4:09 p.m., when lifeguards on patrol spotted eight members of a visiting group in the water, five of whom were struggling after being swept into a strong rip current. Dispatch was notified and two lifeguards entered the surf as the district’s Surf Rescue Team staged onshore with rescue watercraft.

One swimmer had reportedly gone face-down from exhaustion before a lifeguard reached them and brought them safely to shore. The second lifeguard assisted four additional distressed swimmers back to the beach. Cannon Beach Fire District EMS crews and Medix Ambulance personnel treated all five for mild hypothermia. None required transport.

A family member later admitted, “We did not take the lifeguards’ warnings seriously.”

According to the north Oregon coast rescue team, the swimmers were part of a larger group of 15 visitors. Lifeguards had already contacted them three times earlier in the afternoon, warning about rip currents and submerged rocks near the area known as The Needles or the Bone Yard. They advised the group to remain in knee-deep water, wear wetsuits, and stay out of the hazardous zone.

Despite those warnings, several members re-entered the surf. As lifeguards approached for a fourth contact, they saw multiple swimmers in distress and shifted immediately from prevention to rescue.

“If not for the diligence of the lifeguards, this incident would have almost certainly resulted in a fatality and recovery operation rather than a rescue. Their rapid response unquestionably saved lives,” said Fire Chief Marc Reckmann, who served as incident commander.

Reckmann also noted the evolution of the lifeguard program since the Fire District took over operations in 2024, citing updated policies, expanded procedures, and a nationally recognized training program certified by the United States Lifesaving Association.

The district is urging visitors to take rip-current hazards seriously. Oregon coast officials emphasize wearing proper thermal protection.

“Stay in shallow water (approximately knee deep) and keep your feet on the sand,” they said.

They warn never to underestimate cold-water conditions or the strength of rip currents. Anyone caught in one should remain calm, conserve energy, and swim parallel to the shoreline.

Cannon Beach Fire District thanked its Ocean Safety Division, Medix Ambulance Service, and Seaside Fire & Rescue for their coordinated response, saying it remains committed to public safety through education, prevention, and professional ocean rescue operations.
