(Portland, Oregon) – An intense fireball streaked through the Pacific Northwest skies mid-evening last night (Friday), seen for about three, four seconds and causing a bit of a stir across the internet. The fiery cosmic debris lit up in bright green colors, according to most reports, and some say it even fragmented at one point.

It happened about 10:02 p.m., with the American Meteor Society (AMS) receiving over 70 reports and even snagging video. However, the AMS still wants to know: did you see it?

Check your door camera: the streak went from SE to NW. If you have seen it or have video, look up this event on the AMS site and share.

It was seen from just about everywhere along the I-5 Corridor north of Eugene – although there were no reports from the Oregon coast or Washington coast. The closest there was a report from Hillsboro, near the Oregon Coast Range.

Wherever it came from, it was a rogue chunk of material that is not connected to any meteor shower right now, said OMSI astronomy expert Jim Todd.

“There is no major meteor shower currently,” Todd said.

Todd said meteors are also known as shooting stars, and they are essentially small celestial objects that hit the Earth's atmosphere. A fireball is a particularly bright kind of meteor that is seen burning up some 60 to 80 miles above.

“A green fireball in the sky is often due to the presence of magnesium,” Todd said. “Magnesium is a metal that, when heated and vaporized in the Earth's atmosphere, emits a bright blue-green light. Nickel can also contribute to a green color, but magnesium is more commonly associated with green fireballs.”
