Cape Lookout State Park, between Oceanside and Pacific City, was scheduled to undergo some major work in spring 2025, which Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) said would've closed the park in early spring. Earlier this year, they had to shut down camping reservations for that time of year.

“Cape Lookout State Park will move its construction closure to summer 2025, which means spring campground reservations will reopen,” OPRD said. “The park was slated to close temporarily for construction starting in spring 2025, but the schedule has changed.”

Now, all reservable campsites in loops A, B, C and D along with yurts and deluxe cabins are back open on the state park's reservation system. As of this week, you can once again reserve stays in March 1 through May 31. See the Cape Lookout reservation site.

The exact period that reservations will be cut off again is not yet known, as OPRD said the closures and construction will now start in summer or fall of 2025. Construction will also close the day-use areas. Once it begins, it will likely take a year to complete.

OPRD said the project was originally going to include moving some of the camping loops at the popular north Oregon coast destination, but geologic studies later found some unexpected issues beneath the area and other safety concerns. They had actually planned to move the sections to higher ground and away from the beach. Now, the work project will concentrate on extending the life of the existing campground and the surrounding infrastructure.

Among the issues the park is facing:

The existing dunes revetments need reinforcing to prevent seawater from entering camping areas.

Electrical and water systems in some camping loops require upgrading.

The day-use parking lot needs resurfacing and the campground's restroom / shower building will be replaced.

“Cape Lookout is one of the nine GO Bond projects at Oregon State Parks supported through Oregon-issued general obligation bonds approved by the Oregon State Legislature in 2021,” OPRD said.

During some winters, part of the beach shows ghost forest stumps 4,000 years old. In previous years, as Neskowin began losing ghost forest stumps to high tidal action, some of the debris of those ancient pieces ended up here.

Right above the north coast hotspot is Anderson's Viewpoint, Ocean Vistas, Hang Gliding.
