(Florence, Oregon) – A lot of rain is hitting the region and it may have some unexpected effects. Yet even as the rain continues, the National Weather Service has issued an air quality alert for just about all Lane County, including the coastline.
The Lane Regional Air Protection Agency has issued an Air Quality Advisory for western Lane County, effective until 8 PM PDT Tuesday. Intermittent smoke is expected in eastern Lane County, including the Eugene-Springfield area. The advisory also covers the central Oregon coast, including Florence.
Wildfires burning in the region, combined with forecasted weather conditions, are expected to cause air quality to reach unhealthy levels at times through Tuesday evening.
“Pollutants in smoke can cause burning eyes, runny nose, aggravate heart and lung diseases, and aggravate other serious health problems,” the NWS said. “Limit outdoor activities and keep children indoors if it is smoky.”

Rainfall Continues Across Southern Oregon

Rainfall that had been forecast for several days is now ongoing across southern Oregon – including the coastline - with higher amounts reported in westside areas. Precipitation is expected to continue through Monday night, followed by a brief lull before another round arrives Tuesday into Wednesday.
Areas like Port Orford, Coos Bay and Bandon may see some real weather action. The heaviest rainfall is expected along and near the south Oregon coast, where totals could reach up to 3 inches by Wednesday evening.

"Westside areas not along and near the coast could see amounts around 0.50"-1.00" by Wednesday," the NWS said.

While widespread flooding is not anticipated, nuisance flooding on roadways is likely, along with potential mud and rock slides in vulnerable areas.
Light rain may linger into Thursday in the northwest portion of the area (including Reedsport, Coos Bay), but overall rainfall amounts are expected to decrease significantly after Wednesday, with dry conditions returning. Drivers are urged to use caution on slick roads and watch for debris in slide-prone zones.
