Three Quakes Close Together Off South Oregon Coast Sunday Night

(Bandon, Oregon) - Three small to medium quakes shook off the Oregon coast on Sunday evening, with the strongest one clocking in at a sizable magnitude 5.3, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

None of them were strong enough to create a tsunami. No alert was sent out. It takes at least a 7.0 quake to initiate a tsunami.

Two hit apparently simultaneously at 6:30 p.m., but at least several miles apart and at slightly different depths. Both were about 197 miles west of Bandon, and roughly 202 miles from Coos Bay.

The magnitude 5.3 started out listed as a magnitude 4.6, according to some quake apps. However, it was reportedly upgraded to 5.3 about an hour later. That one was 6 miles deep, like most underwater shakers.

A smaller one happened that same minute at magnitude 3.9 at 7.6 miles deep.

It is possible these two are part of the same quake and that has not been corrected yet.

A third happened at 7:35 p.m. (about an hour later), at a magnitude 2.6 about 83 miles west of Dunes City. That one was also 6 miles deep and almost 100 miles NE of the other two.

The largest one had 11 people chiming in that they had felt it.

Offshore earthquakes are common in this region, with dozens recorded each year.

The activity came from a well-known cluster of faults near the Gorda Ridge and the Blanco Fracture Zone, an area that is highly active. Scientists emphasize that shaking in this offshore region is not directly connected to the Cascadia Subduction Zone, the major fault capable of producing a catastrophic megathrust earthquake.

These events do not relieve pressure on any fault in the region, but they are a reminder that the big one will hit one day.

Measurements of earthquake magnitudes are extremely wide, although the increments may appear small. A 7.0 is 1,000 times bigger than a 4.0, according to the USGS. But it is 31,622 times stronger in its release of energy.
