The Moonlight Excursion Train, a 21-and-over event, offers a glorious evening's ride behind a steam locomotive with live music, coastal scenery and onboard beer and wine service. There's some serious moonlight here – to borrow a phrase. And there's stars, glowing towns in the distance and an atmosphere you cannot beat.

The round-trip departs Garibaldi and travels north to Wheeler at sunset, returning along Tillamook Bay, Nehalem Bay and the Pacific Ocean in evening light. This time around there's a load of tunes involved. New for 2026 comes a rotating roster of musicians will perform onboard. Beer from Pelican Brewing and Freight Beer and wines from Nehalem Bay Winery will be available, along with food from Twins Ranch Café by pre-order or purchase on the train.

Meanwhile, there's the constant presence of a celebrity onboard. Well, not so much onboard as the transport itself.

The railroad is also launching the Wheeler Limited, offering summer service on the northern half of the line for the first time. The excursion features the historic McCloud River Railroad No. 25 steam locomotive – which was in the movie Stand By Me. The trip runs through forest, estuary and coastal viewpoints in late-afternoon light, returning around golden hour. Passengers receive a one-hour layover in Wheeler, where local restaurants and shops will remain open for the event.

This wonder-filled sojourn includes narration on railroad history as you chug along, also covering the region and its natural features. It is open to all ages, with departures available from both Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach.

“Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience a evening full of history, amazing views and experiences to remember,” the railroad said. “This is a family oriented experience and all ages are welcome aboard this excursion.”
