This year, Newport Parks and Recreation is teaming up with local astrophotographer Jeremy Likness, host of the weekly SkyWatch segment on KYAQ, to offer a trio of celestial events blending science, art, and the great outdoors. Whether you're a stargazing enthusiast or an aspiring astrophotographer, these events promise unforgettable summer nights under the stars.

“We’re excited to offer these unique experiences that blend recreation, science education, and the beauty of Oregon’s night skies,” says Jenni Remillard, Recreation Program Specialist. “Whether you’re a budding astronomer, a photography enthusiast, or simply looking for a magical evening with your family, there’s something for everyone.”

The first is a Star Party at Frank Wade Park at the ballfield. July 25 at 9 p.m.

Oregon Coast Beach Connection

Kick off your cosmic summer with a Star Party at Frank Wade Park. You'll be amazed at how much is visible within Newport’s city limits - stars, galaxies, clusters, planets, and nebulae. Jeremy will demonstrate various telescopic techniques, including live stacking, bringing deep space into view.

The session will be projected onto a screen for easy viewing, and attendees will have the chance to see lunar landing locations, Jupiter’s stripes, and distant stars - weather permitting. It is, after all, the Oregon coast. This free, family-friendly event is perfect for curious minds of all ages. No registration required: bring a blanket, a chair, and your sense of wonder.

The second is the Astrophotography Workshop on August 16. 8 – 10 PM at the Newport Recreation Center & Local Dark Sky Site.

Learn to capture the magic of the night sky in this hands-on Astrophotography Workshop with Jeremy Likness. He will guide you in making the most of your camera after dark - whether it's a DSLR or a smartphone capable of nighttime photography.

The first hour at the Newport Recreation Center will be instructional, followed by on-location practice at a designated dark sky site.

Cost: $14.50 ($12.50 for Newport residents) Register at the Recreation Center, by calling (541) 265-7783, or online:
