The iconic north Oregon coast park's overnight facilities and day-use area will be shut down then and not in the spring, as was originally planned. This leaves room for campers during the summer, after OPRD had stopped reservations earlier this year in anticipation of the spring start.

There will truly be some happy campers in the Oceanside area as the schedule has changed.

OPRD said all of Cape Lookout's reservable campsites as well as yurts and deluxe cabins are again online as of last week. This includes sites in A, B, C and D loops. They are available for stays May 31 through the current 6-month reservation window. See the Cape Lookout reservation site.

“Originally, the project included moving camp loops A & B to higher ground and away from encroaching seawater, but unexpected geological and safety concerns prevented the move,” OPRD said.

Subsequent geologic studies revealed some unforeseen issues.

Now, however, the focus is extending the life of existing facilities. This work includes:

- Reinforcing the existing dune to prevent seawater from entering the camp loops
- Upgrading electrical and water systems in C and D loops
- Day use improvements
- Replacing campground restroom/shower building

OPRD said the project will likely keep the park shut down through all of winter and hopefully reopen in the spring or summer.

“We encourage visitors to monitor Oregon State Park website for up-to-date information about the Cape Lookout State Park GO Bond project and campground closures,” OPRD said.

Late last year, OPRD changed its plans a second time, saying the work project would begin in the summer, and thus spring reservations would be back open. Now, the massive project has been shifted once more – although that possibility was made public when the announcement about spring reservations came.

“Cape Lookout is one of the nine GO Bond projects at Oregon State Parks supported through Oregon-issued general obligation bonds approved by the Oregon State Legislature in 2021,” OPRD said.

During certain winters, portions of the beach reveal 4,000-year-old ghost forest stumps. In previous years, as Neskowin began losing ghost forest stumps due to high tidal action, some of the debris from these ancient pieces ended up here.
