(Coos Bay, Oregon) – An off-the-beaten path treasure in Oregon is in need of a little TLC. State park rangers are asking for volunteers to help clean up Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area on the south coast.
The spring cleanup event happens 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, an annual affair near Coos Bay, put together by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD).
“Volunteers will help clean up the parking area and conduct trail work at the park, which is about 25 miles northeast of Coos Bay,” OPRD said. “There will be something for everyone to help with at the park. Lend a hand and help get the park ready before summer begins.”
Volunteers should be ready to navigate short distances across uneven terrain and trails to reach the service area. The cleanup activities will be held outdoors, requiring participants to feel comfortable using hand tools and wearing work gloves.
You'll want to dress appropriately for Oregon coast weather and wear closed-toed shoes. Choose clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. Make sure to bring a water bottle (as there is no access to water on-site), a sack lunch, and work gloves if available - though gloves will be provided for those without. Snacks will also be available for participants.

If you would like to sign up for the event or have any questions, contact Park Ranger Jess Hayward at jess.hayward@oprd.oregon.gov or 541-888-3732.
This is not the only south Oregon coast state park in the area that's asking for help. Shore Acres State Park and its garden are also requesting volunteers for various cleanup dates.
Shore Acres State Park and OPRD are inviting everyone to roll up their sleeves and join its Garden Volunteer Days, held monthly through September. This initiative offers participants the chance to assist park rangers in maintaining the picturesque gardens located at 89526 Cape Arago Highway, Coos Bay.
Volunteers will gain hands-on experience in tasks such as rose pruning and preserving the historic lily pond. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following dates:
May 16, June 20, July 18, and September 19 will center on general garden cleanup, which involves weeding, trimming, mulching, planting, rose pruning, and removing invasive plants. These dates are open to volunteers aged 14 and older.
On August 15, the effort will shift to removing English ivy, an invasive species. This effort is also open to volunteers aged 14 and older.
Contact is again Hayward at jess.hayward@oprd.oregon.gov or 541-888-3732.
