(Newport, Oregon) – Lincoln County authorities have revealed more on the high-speed chase between Newport and Lincoln City Thursday that resulted in the suspect zooming down the highway with one wheel sparking into flames. (Photos and video Ian and Jenny Nelson)
The dramatic scenes were caught by a dozen or so witnesses recording or taking pictures, including Ian and Jenny Nelson, who provided these images and video.
The latest: it all started with a burglary in Waldport and then became a multi-agency pursuit, vehicle crash and arrest.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) said they responded around 9:00 a.m. to reports of a break-in at a local business in Waldport. Surveillance footage showed a red Dodge Ram arriving at the scene. The driver exited the vehicle, spray-painted over two of the three working security cameras, and forced entry into the building. Authorities said the suspect stole an electronic bicycle and an undisclosed amount of cash before leaving.
Indeed, footage of the chase shows a large e-bike in the back of the pickup. Oregon Coast Beach Connection created a slow-motion replay of the chase, at the end of the video.
The investigation and its scope widened to other areas of the Oregon coast and revealed something new.
“Deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office worked with Coos Bay Sheriff’s Office, Coos Bay Police, and North Bend Police and learned the registered owner of the truck sold the vehicle earlier that morning in the Coos Bay area,” LCSO said.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., Newport Police officers located the red Dodge in the Fred Meyer parking lot. When officers attempted contact, the driver fled, prompting a pursuit northbound on Highway 101. Oregon State Police, Lincoln County deputies, and Lincoln City Police assisted in deploying stop sticks.

At this point, two of the suspect's tires blew and one wheel came off, yet he continued surging forward, causing the dramatic display of hard metal on pavement from about Gleneden Beach into Taft.
The chase ended when the truck crashed near SE 51st Street and Highway 101. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was quickly subdued by bystanders and taken into custody without further incident.
Other local witnesses report those bystanders wanted to remain anonymous.

Authorities identified the suspect as 33-year-old Tyler Mullen, who was booked into the Lincoln County Jail. Charges include a parole warrant, attempting to elude both in a vehicle and on foot, reckless driving, two counts of reckless endangering, multiple counts of criminal mischief, failure to perform the duties of a driver, burglary, and theft.
