(Charleston, Oregon) – The Coos Bay area of the south Oregon coast gets especially yummy in February, with two distinctive food events happening. First, February 7 brings the Robert Burns celebration back to North Bend, where you get a taste of the British Isles and a whole range of its vibrant culture. Then, on February 14, there's an enormous amount of crab to consume at the Charleston Crab Feed. (Photo courtesy Oregon's Adventure Coast)

The Charleston Merchants Association and Charleston Visitor Center will bring back one of the south coast’s most popular food traditions on February 14, when the 41st Annual Charleston Crab Feed returns to the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology on Boat Basin Road. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 63466 Boat Basin Road, across from the Charleston Marine Life Center.

Organizers expect to serve more than 900 pounds of fresh Dungeness crab, purchased directly from Charleston crabbers and processed locally. Whole and half-crab dinners will be sold at market price and include side dishes and a roll. A gourmet hot dog meal will be available for those who prefer an alternative, and local businesses have contributed items for raffle drawings. Desserts will be provided by Charleston Fishing Families, with proceeds supporting the organization.

Tickets are available online and at the door, and to-go meals will be offered. Meal prices are currently listed at $40 for a whole crab, $28 for a half crab, and $18 for the hot dog option.

The Charleston Crab Feed began in the 1980s and now draws 700 to 900 attendees each year, according to organizers. See more, get tickets.

Another major winter event arrives one week earlier. On Saturday, February 7, the Coastal Celtic Society will host its 22nd Annual Burns Night Celebration at the Ko-Kwel Casino Resort. The gathering, held in the Salmon Room, opens with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by a program from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

The celebration honors Scottish poet Robert Burns with traditional ceremony, live music, and a themed banquet. Entertainment will include bagpipes, Celtic harp, cello, flute, and a performance by the Celtic band Finnavara. The event typically draws 140 to 150 guests and is considered one of Oregon’s premier Burns Night observances.
