(Depoe Bay, Oregon) - Oregon’s coastal highways are set for a new wave of construction activity, with the Oregon Department of Transportation announcing several projects that will affect traffic in the coming weeks and months.
Among them is the famed Highway 6 to the Oregon coast - but not where the work has usually been happening.
Work on OR 6 will expand beyond the major landslide zone between mileposts 29 and 41 as crews begin setting up multiple work areas next week. The agency plans to replace outdated guardrail throughout the corridor, with early efforts expected near mileposts 5 and 19.
Once construction begins later in January, drivers should expect daytime crews, lane and shoulder closures, flaggers, delays, and construction noise. Temporary traffic signals are planned for a 24-hour lane closure in spring 2026. All work is weather-dependent, and schedules may shift.

The project includes upgrading old guardrail, installing new guardrail where it is missing, and replacing curb ramps at the bridge between Mills Bridge Road and Pete Street to meet current ADA standards. ODOT notes that guardrail improvements help prevent vehicles from entering hazardous areas and provide clearer guidance for drivers.
In Depoe Bay, crews will begin preparing this week for preservation work on the U.S. 101 Depoe Bay Bridge. Most activity will take place beneath the structure, with daytime work scheduled Monday through Thursday. Drivers may encounter lane and shoulder closures, delays, and construction noise. Over the next several weeks, crews will install temporary signs, scaffolding, and work platforms.

The project will reapply the bridge’s protective coating, last installed in 1993, and includes minor concrete repairs and rail work. The design and construction budget is $10,978,943.
Farther north, ODOT is previewing major work planned for the Astoria-Megler Bridge in 2027. The bridge carries more than 9,200 vehicles per day, including over 500 semi-trucks, and the driving surface on the Oregon side has deteriorated due to heavy traffic and de-icer use. The upcoming project will replace damaged sections of the driving surface and install new bridge rails that meet current standards while maintaining the bridge’s familiar appearance.
Daytime lane closures are expected during construction, and full nighttime closures are possible.

To help the public understand the scope of the work, ODOT is hosting an online open house along with an in-person meeting in Astoria on January 21. Staff will be available to answer questions, explain expected closures and detours, and outline construction impacts.
In-Person Meeting:
Date: January 21, 2026
Times: 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 5:30 - 7 p.m.
Location: 350 W Marine Drive, Astoria, OR
ODOT continues to urge drivers to slow down, stay alert, and move over in all work zones. The agency reminds the public that fines double in Oregon work zones at all times, whether workers are present or not.
