Astoria police arrested a man Friday morning after officers responded to a reported break-in at the historic red building on the Columbia River at the end of 31st Street – otherwise known as “Big Red.”

A caretaker had called police after noticing signs of a possible intrusion. Officers searched the property and discovered an individual who had unlawfully taken up residence inside. He was taken into custody without incident. Police also found that a substantial amount of copper and other valuables had been removed from the building, though investigators say there is no evidence linking the arrested man to that theft.

The department noted that metal thefts continue to cause financial losses for property owners and damage to structures that are part of Astoria’s historic landscape. It remains a problem all over town.

“On a positive note, this rare opportunity allowed us to briefly step inside one of our community’s historic structures and appreciate its character and craftsmanship,” the department said.

The Big Red building was a cannery during Astoria's long heyday as a canning industry hub, but in recent decades had wavered between disrepair and rejuvenation. It served as a practice pad for indie rock band Blind Pilot for a time, and had a nickname related to that during that period.

It was sold in 2024, and photos from then show a much different and refurbished interior. Big Red appears to be trashed by comparison.

Police urge residents to report suspicious activity around vacant or historic buildings by calling 911 or the non-emergency line at 503-325-4411.
